How After
Hours Trading Works
After hours trading is
made possible by computerized order matching
systems known as ECNs or Electronic
Communications Networks. As after hours trading
becomes more common and the major exchanges adopt
programs of their own, Schwab's After Hours
services will continue to evolve. Here are some
basics of how after hours trading works at Schwab
today:
- Separate Trading
Session Schwab's After
Hours Trading Session is completely
independent from the standard market
hours trading session. After hours orders
must be placed by logging on to special
After Hours Trading screens at schwab.com,
or by calling 1-800-435-4000 and asking
for an After Hours Trading representative.
Please note that the After Hours Trading
screens are different from those used for
trading during standard market hours.
- Hours of Operation
After hours orders can be entered
from 4:05 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time,
Monday through Friday, but order
execution will not begin until the
official opening of Schwab's After Hours
Trading Session at 4:30 p.m. ET.1
- Eligible Securities
Most Nasdaq and certain listed securities
are currently eligible for trading after
hours at Schwab. However, at any time,
any number of securities may not be
available due to lack of trading interest
during the After Hours Trading Session.
- Order Types
Only limit orders and short sell limit
orders - not market orders - are accepted
after hours. The maximum order size is 5,000
shares. All orders must be entered in
round lots (increments of 100 shares);
odd and mixed lot orders are not
currently accepted during the after hours
session.
- Quotes
Quotes for the After Hours Trading
Session reflect the best bid (buy) and
ask (sell) orders currently available
through the REDIBook ECN. (REDIBook
prices may also include prices from other
ECNs participating in the after hours
trading network.) After hours quotes are
only available on the special After Hours
Trading screens at schwab.com or by
calling 1-800-435-4000; they are not
currently available through TeleBroker or
other automated phone services. For any
particular security, if there are no buy
or sell orders available through the
REDIBook ECN, no quote will be available
at that time. After hours quotes may
differ significantly from standard market
hours closing prices.
- Change and Change/Cancel
Orders You can attempt to
change or cancel an after hours order
within the same after hours session, as
long as your order has not already been
executed. You cannot change your after
hours order to a standard market hours
order.
- Unexecuted Orders
Unexecuted standard market hour orders do
not carry over into the After Hours
Trading Session, nor will unexecuted
after hours orders carry over to the next
day's standard market hours session. If
an after hours order is not executed, it
will be automatically canceled at the end
of that After Hours Trading Session.
- Commissions and Trade
Settlement Commissions for
after hours trading are based on Schwab's
standard fee and commission schedule.
After hours trades will normally settle
three business days from the date the
order is executed, just like orders
placed during standard market hours.
1 After
Hours Trading Sessions will not take place on
official Exchange holidays or when Exchanges
close early. Schwab reserves the right to change
or modify hours of operation for after hours
trading at any time. A Schwab After Hours Trading
Session, or any security traded therein, may be
temporarily or permanently suspended without
prior notice at any time at our discretion.
